Takedowns and pressure lead Archie Colgan to near finish, stay undefeated

Archie Colgan found great success while wrestling at the University of Wyoming, becoming a two-time NCAA Championship qualifier and capturing a Big 12 title while racking up 112 collegiate wrestling wins. Colgan then went 3-0 as an amateur before scoring his current 12-0 record as a pro so far. After an 8-0 run in Bellator, Colgan made his PFL debut in June, defeating Mansour Barnaoui.

 

Jay-Jay Wilson, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, credits the discipline and the sport of MMA as saving his life through dark times. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist has an 11-1 record with eight finishes, which includes an impressive 9-1 run while with Bellator. Wilson made his PFL debut in April, scoring a third-round finish of Mads Burnell.

 

Which of these two veteran grappling experts will come out on top?

 

 

Round 1

 

Front kick by Wilson, followed by a low kick. Colgan shoots in and scores a takedown. Colgan gets right to the back as Wilson scrambles up. Colgan lifts him and gets another takedown before Wilson gets to his feet by the fence. Colgan lands some knees to the legs of Wilson. Wilson lands a couple of backwards elbows. Colgan riding, trying to control the action. Wilson trying for a kimura grip. Wilson rolls through, but Colgan keeps a hold of him briefly before they go back to distance. Colgan goes back to striking. Colgan with a right hand before Wilson tries to press forward. Wilson presses Colgan into the fence now. Knee by Colgan. Front kick by Wilson. Wilson misses a low kick but connects on another. Left hand by Colgan. Uppercut by Colgan. Wilson lands a head kick, but he over-rushes in and Colgan scores a takedown. Wilson tries for a triangle armbar but can’t get it. Colgan is looking to work in the guard. Colgan gets the back as Wilson gets to his feet. Colgan scoops him up and gets a takedown. Round 2

 

Wilson tries to get his strikes going early into the second round. Low kick by Wilson. Body kick is caught, but Colgan doesn’t get to do much with it. Left hand and a low kick by Wilson. Another leg kick by Wilson. Kick to the body by Wilson. Colgan works the right hand before gaining entry and scoring another takedown. Colgan is keeping top pressure, trying to work around the guard of Wilson. Wilson is warned for grabbing the fence.

 

Wilson tries to turn to get himself back up, but Colgan’s defenses are strong. Halfway through the round, Wilson finally gets back to his feet. Colgan lifts him and slams him, bringing this back to the mat. Colgan pins down one of Wilson’s legs, but Wilson works his way back up again. Wilson is moving himself along the fence, but Colgan has a tight hold on him. Wilson works his way out of it, and the fight returns to the center. Low kicks from Colgan. Low kicks from Wilson. Colgan is in control of this fight through two.

 

 

Round 3

 

Wilson comes out of the gate with a flurry, trying to snatch control emphatically. Colgan lands a right hand. Wilson flashing his jabs. Low kick from Wilson. Left hand from Colgan. High kick from Colgan. Outside kicks from Wilson. Wilson flashing the left jab before landing another outside kick. Right hand by Wilson. Low kick by Wilson. Colgan with a little flurry. Front kick by Wilson. Wilson comes forward, but Colgan gets a double-leg takedown. Wilson goes for an armbar, but Colgan gets his arm out of danger.

 

Right hand gets through the guard of Wilson. Colgan looking to land from up top. Wilson trying to scramble free, but he’s stuck near the fence. Wilson gets up but remains in a body lock. Colgan gets a brief mat return, but Wilson frees himself and we’re back in the center. Right hands from Wilson. Colgan with a big slam, landing some nasty elbows in the closing seconds of this fight. Colgan continues to land, as Wilson struggles to defend and get back to his feet. It’s close, but Wilson is able to survive to the final bell.
